Climate and vegetation
The climate is typically continental, with hot, dry summers and cold winters. The large plains and farmland - grain fields, maize fields, untended plots - are ideal conditions for ragweed (Ambrosia artemisiifolia), an invasive species that spread from the USA. Dry, windy days in August and September carry the pollen for tens of kilometres, so concentrations rise even indoors.

The pollen forecast for Slavonia covers the following larger urban areas:
Typical symptoms
Allergy sufferers in Slavonia often report exceptionally strong symptoms in late summer - intense sneezing (often in fits), a heavy runny nose, strong watery eyes, coughing and shortness of breath. In people with asthma, ragweed often triggers attacks. Hirst-type pollen-trap measurements in Slavonia frequently show ragweed pollen concentrations above 50 grains/m³ - twice as high as in Continental Croatia.
Protection and tips
Immunotherapy (allergy vaccination) is the most effective long-term treatment for ragweed allergy and is especially recommended for residents of Slavonia. During the ragweed season, stay indoors on very windy days, use HEPA filters, and avoid farmland and roadsides. Slavonia runs annual ragweed control campaigns - report large patches of the weed to your local municipal services.
Frequently asked questions - Slavonia
Why is ragweed allergy so severe in Slavonia?
Slavonia has ideal conditions for ragweed - warm, dry summers, large areas of farmland with untended field margins, and continuous roads (the A3) along which the weed spreads. Ragweed pollen concentrations in Slavonski Brod and Osijek regularly exceed 50 grains/m³ - the threshold for a 'very high' level is 20.
When does ragweed flower in Slavonia?
Ragweed begins flowering in late July, peaks in late August and early September, and ends in mid-October with the first frosts. In Slavonia the season is usually 1-2 weeks longer than in the northern regions of Croatia.
How widespread is allergy in Osijek and Slavonski Brod?
Estimates suggest that 20-25% of the adult population in Slavonia has some form of pollen allergy, while ragweed allergy alone affects around 10-15% of residents. That is significantly higher than the Croatian average (15-20%), primarily because of the ragweed levels.
Does immunotherapy help with ragweed allergy?
Yes - subcutaneous or sublingual immunotherapy (SCIT/SLIT) has a proven effectiveness of 60-80% for ragweed allergy. Treatment lasts 3-5 years, and the effect persists for years after it ends. It is especially recommended for residents of Slavonia, where concentrations are extreme.
Is there a legal obligation to remove ragweed in Croatia?
Yes - the Plant Health Act and its implementing regulations require landowners to destroy ragweed before it flowers. Campaigns are carried out every year in Slavonia. If you notice large patches of ragweed, report them to the Croatian Agricultural and Forestry Advisory Service or your local municipal services.
