Climate and vegetation

A sub-Mediterranean climate with mild winters and warm summers, but with a strong bura wind that prevails from October to April. The vegetation is varied - the coastal areas have olive groves and cypresses, while the interior (Vinodol, Senj) has oak and hornbeam forests. The bura carries pollen from Continental Croatia over the Velebit mountains - allergy sufferers in Rijeka often react to pollen that did not flower locally.

Typical symptoms

Allergy sufferers in Kvarner report long symptom seasons - from February (cypress) through May (grasses, oak) to September (mugwort). Rijeka's allergy sufferers often have polysensitisation to 3-5 different allergens. The bura carries pollen from Continental Croatia, so symptoms can be strong even when there is no local seasonal peak.

Protection and tips

Follow the pollen forecast and the wind direction - the bura coming from the Velebit direction brings pollen from Lika and Gorski kotar. In Rijeka and Opatija, avoid the parks during peak seasons. Immunotherapy for olive and oak is available at allergy clinics in Rijeka.

Frequently asked questions - Littoral Croatia

What are the main allergens in Rijeka?

Rijeka is dominated by cypress (February - April), oak and grasses (April - June), and olive (May - June). Because of the proximity to Continental Croatia, allergy sufferers in Rijeka often also react to birch pollen that the bura carries over from Lika.

When do allergies peak in Kvarner?

The peak is in May and June, when the flowering of olive, oak, grasses and cypress overlaps. Many allergy sufferers report their worst symptoms in this period - a combination of several allergens in a single day can be exhausting.

Does the bura affect pollen concentrations in Rijeka?

Yes, the bura from Velebit brings pollen from Continental Croatia (especially birch and oak) to the coast. Allergy sufferers in Rijeka often report strong symptoms on bura days even when the Mediterranean season is not active. The jugo, by contrast, brings moisture and calms the season for a short while.
